A recent CNN headline declared that, “Trump Dismisses Science Amid Pandemic, Hurricane and Fires” (9/14/20). Whistleblower Brian Murphy, the former head of the Department of Homeland Security’s intelligence division, accused senior leaders of distorting intelligence to downplay threats from Russia and White Supremacists. During the past two years, America has witnessed a deluge of whistleblower complaints, books, and news reports from or about career civil servants, inspectors generals, diplomats, and federal prosecutors who have refused to bend to political pressure from the Trump Administration. They have faced demotions and other retaliatory actions for speaking out about their refusal to violate the law or science or longstanding policies. Our timely CLE program will address whistleblower First Amendment rights and the patchwork of laws that protect these whistleblowers, whether they are political appointees or career civil servants who have suffered retaliation for their reports of Illegality.
