In honor of National Mental Health Awareness Month, today we highlight Douglas K. Stern, Partner in the Mental Health Law Practice at Abrams Fensterman, Fensterman, Eisman, Formato, Ferrara, Wolf & Carone, LLP.
Doug has over twenty five years of experience in the fields of mental health, criminal, and elder law. He represents institutions, mental health and healthcare professionals in Mental Hygiene Law Article 9 matters, Article 81 guardianship matters, and other matters related to mental health and healthcare law. Doug has an extensive criminal defense practice, including representation of defendants who suffer from a mental health condition and knowledge of the alternatives to incarceration through the use of diversion courts such as Mental Health Court or Drug Treatment Court.
Doug has argued and briefed cases before the Appellate Division and the Court of Appeals. In Article 81 guardianship matters, he has been appointed as Counsel, Court Evaluator and Guardian by the Supreme Court in the metropolitan area. Doug has lectured extensively on various topics including psychiatry and the law, trial advocacy, select disability and elder law issues.
