NEW YORK, December 6, 2013 – Today, New York City Taxi & Limousine Commissioner and Partner at Abrams Fensterman, LLP, Frank Carone announced a settlement agreement in coordination with the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and TLC has been reached that will drastically improve wheelchair accessibility in 50 percent of taxicabs.
The agreement sets to make half of New York City’s taxicabs wheelchair accessible by 2020. The TLC is expected to propose guidelines for accessibility, which pend approval at a public hearing in 2014.

Presently, New York City taxicabs participate in a dispatch program that allows individuals to request accessible taxis using the 311 service. Today’s agreement stands to further wheelchair access to make New York’s taxicab fleet the most accessible in the country.
